Ask Amanda: How to Pay for Part-Time Graduate School

Posted by Amanda Keighley on Jan 17, 2017 9:30:00 AM

But there was one question I left out on purpose…because I knew it needed a post of its own! When prospective students come to me to pursue a graduate certificate or degree, nearly all of them ask the same thing: “How am I going to pay for school?”

Most of these students are working professionals, looking to take one course at a time. Unfortunately, most financial aid won’t cover graduate certificates or part-time students, and many of us simply don’t have the time or freedom take at least two classes, or six credits, a semester.

So, where does the money come from for part-time students?

“What should I expect as an online student?”

“Can I get hands-on, practical learning in an online course?”

This summer, robots took over New York City!

I’m not going to lie, it was challenging. With no financial commitment and the overwhelming responses from thousands of participants in MOOCs, it’s easy to just fade away into the background and disengage. I’m happy to say though that I stuck with it, and have a nice certificate to show for it!

Here are five simple tricks that can help anyone stay on track in order to complete a MOOC, or really, any online class:

  • Make a commitment and identify your goals
  • Make yourself familiar with the course requirements and learning platform
  • Stay on track
  • Get connected
  • Expand your network and use social media
