Going Back To School: Your 2017 Resolution

If you’re a parent, it’s hard to make time for yourself. You tend to turn your life over to your family, making sure they have everything they need to go after their dreams. And sometimes, this means your own dreams get put on hold.

I was the same way. As a working professional and mom, there wasn’t much “me time” in my day. I worked, I managed my home, and I took care of my kids. I always felt like I should’ve been doing more to improve myself: become more knowledgeable, advance my career goals. So every year, on New Year’s Eve, I would make a resolution to do something for myself.

And every year, I failed. But then something changed.

My main job is working with companies and their employees to figure out the kind of advanced education and training they need to succeed. I meet with business leaders, WPI creates custom programs, and then I host information sessions for employees who are interested in enrolling.

This summer, robots took over New York City!

Don’t panic! I’m talking about an awesome conference I had the chance to attend in June: ATX East. This event drew robotics and automation experts from all over the country, with over 900 exhibits and 11,000 industry professionals. It was great to learn more about innovations in the field of robotics engineering and to meet and mingle with some seriously brilliant minds.

Getting the Most Out of Structural Materials

Back in the early 2000s, I had a big problem.

I was the Senior Vice President at National Grid. Power systems is a dynamic field, and advanced knowledge is critical. We needed engineers with graduate-level education in power, but they were hard to find. The company was faced with the tough question: What can you do when the engineers you need don’t exist?

In the end, the answer was simple: you make them.

It’s official: over 25% of the Master’s degrees awarded by WPI this spring went to working professionals. That’s right; 187 of the newly minted WPI masters came from our online and corporate education programs.
